Madhav National Park was established in the year 1958 with the formation of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Madhavrao Scindia of Gwalior constructed the dams on the Manihar river in the year 1918, constructed Sakya Sagar and Madhav Talab, which today is the only significant water body of the park along with other waterfalls and streams.
