Gulzari Lal Nanda was a wealthy man of versatility. Everyday lifelong thought was the principle of their life. In addition to politics, he also worked in the field of education and labor organization.

Before joining politics, he did his teaching at the National College of Mumbai, and from 1922 to 1946, he was also the secretary of the Labor Association in the textile industry of Ahmedabad.

He was always aware of and prepared for the problems of workers and also tried to diagnose those problems.

The early life of Gulzarilal Nanda

Gulzari Lal Nanda was born on July 4, 1898, in Sialkot (now West Pakistan).

His father Bulaki Ram Nanda and mother Smt Ishwar Devi were Nanda. After taking primary education in Sialkot, Nanda studied at Lahore’s ‘Forman Christian College’ and ‘Allahabad University.’

He also studied in Agra and Amritsar. He graduated in the Arts class and obtained a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree.

In Allahabad University, he researched ‘labor problems,’ and in 1921, he was appointed Professor of Economics at the National College of Bombay.

They were married in 1916 with Lakshmi Devi. In 1921, he participated in Non-Cooperation Movement and 1922 he was elected as the Secretary of the Ahmedabad Textile Workers Union – on this post he continued to work till 1946.

Gulzarilal Nanda’s political life

Gulzari Lal Nanda participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. After this, he was arrested and imprisoned in 1932 to join in Satyagraha Movement.

He was arrested again in 1942 during the Quit India Movement and was kept in jail until 1944.

In 1937, he was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly – he served the Parliamentary Secretary (Labor and Excise Duty) in Bombay Government between 1937 and 1939. As Labor Minister in the Bombay Government, he successfully passed the ‘Labor Dispute Bill’ He was also the secretary of ‘Hindustan Mazdoor Sangak Sangh’ and also the President of Bombay Housing Board.

He is also a member of the National Planning Committee. He played a vital role in the formation of the ‘Indian National Trade Union Congress,’ and later he became its President.

In 1947, Nanda was sent as a representative of the government to participate in the ‘International Labor Conference’ in Switzerland.

During this time, he visited Sweden, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the United Kingdom to study labor and housing systems.

In the year 1950, Nanda was elected the Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, and in 1951 he was given the post of Planning Minister in the Central Government.

He was also given the responsibility for the irrigation and energy department. In 1952, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bombay and was re-elected as the Minister for Planning, Irrigation, and Energy at the Center.

Nanda won again in the Lok Sabha election of 1957 and back took over as Union Labor, Employment and Planning Minister. After this, he was made the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

In the Lok Sabha elections of 1962, he was elected from Sabarkantha and ‘Labor and Employment’ in 1962-63 and the Union Home Minister from 1963 to 1966.
