The early life of Indra Kumar Gujral

Inder Kumar Gujral was born on December 4, 1919, in a town in Jhelum. This place first came under undivided Punjab but is currently in Pakistan.

He was the eldest son of Avtar Niranjan Gujral and Pushpa Gujral. He was born in the freedom fighters family, and his parents actively participated in the fight for independence in Punjab.

During the Quit India Movement, he had to go to jail in 1942. He completed his school education only.

Further studies completed Foreman Christian College and College’s studies from the Halley College of Commerce.

On 26 May 1945, he married his college friend and poet Sheela Bhasin in Lahore. Vishal Gujral and Naresh Gujral have two sons.

The career of Indra Kumar Gujral

He started the political life since his college days. He was a member of the Lahore Students Union and was also the President of the Sangha.

Along with that, he became a part of the Communist Party. By completing his primary education, he became a Communist Party card holder.

From 1976-1980, he served as US Ambassador of USSR India. In 1980, Gujral left the Congress party and joined the Janata Dal.

In VP Singh’s tenure, he became Foreign Minister from 1989-1990. After this, HD again played the same responsibility in the Devgoda government in 1996.

During this time, India tried to improve its relations with neighbouring countries. Apart from this, Gujral was also made the President of the Indian Council of South Asian Co-operation and in 1996 became the Rajya Sabha leader.

On April 21, 1997, Gujral took over the country’s prime minister, but his tenure remained barely 11 months.

In 1999, he was not nominated for election, and thus he retired from politics.

In addition to the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the country, from 1967-1976, he served as Minister of Communications and Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Broadcasting Minister and Minister of State for Work and Housing.

Apart from a politician, he was also the President of Rotary Club, New Delhi. In 1960, he became the co-chairman of the Asian Rotary Conference and in 1991 became the founding member of the India International Center, New Delhi.

He also participated in social and cultural activities and was the president of Nari Niketan Trust, Vice President of Lok Kalyan Samiti and founder president of Delhi Art Theater. He was also the President of AN Gujral Memorial School, Jalandhar, Punjab.

The contribution of Indra Kumar Gujral

IK Gujral was the author of the book ‘Gujral Doctrine’. In this, they have been given the basic principles of maintaining relationships with the neighbouring countries of India.

This book emphasises the importance of friendly relations with the neighbouring countries of India. His work received great respect from world leaders.

These are five principles,

1- India does not expect reciprocity from neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka but instead shelter and help, which can increase mutual trust.

2- No South Asian country will allow its land to be used against other countries in the region.

3- No country will interfere in the internal affairs of each other.

4- All South Asian countries respect each other’s integrity and sovereignty.

5- They should solve all their controversial issues through discussions and conversations.

1931: Participated in the freedom struggle. 1942: Jail went out during the Quit India Movement.

1959-64: New Delhi became the Deputy Chairman of Municipal Corporation.
1960: Rotary Club becomes President of New Delhi.

1964-76: Rajya Sabha member became (twice)
1967-69: became central parliamentary affairs and communications minister
1969-71: Information Broadcasting and Communications became central

1972-75: Information and Broadcast Communications becomes Union Minister
1975-76: State and Planning became Union Minister.
1976-80: Become India’s ambassador for USSR.
1989: Elected to 9th Lok Sabha
1989-90: became foreign minister.
1992-98: Rajya Sabha member (third time)
1993-96: becomes chairman of the Commerce and Textile Committee
1996-97: Becomes Foreign Minister.
1996 (June): Water Resources became the Union Minister.
1997 (April): Becomes the Prime Minister of India.
1998: Re-elected for the 12th Lok Sabha (second time)
1999: Retired from active politics
2012: After long illness passed away on 30th November.
