The early life of Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in a Sikh family in Gah, Punjab province (now in Pakistan) of Akhand Bharat.

His mother’s name was Amrit Kaur and father’s name was Gurmukh Singh. At the young age, his mother passed away, and hence his grandmother raised him.

He was interested in studies since childhood, and he often used to be in class. After the partition of the country, his family moved to Amritsar.

Here he enrolled at the Hindu College. Dr Manmohan Singh graduated in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh.

He later went to Cambridge University and Oxford University, where he completed his postgraduate level studies.

On his return to India, he worked as a professor in Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics.

In 1958, he was married to Gursharan Kaur. They have three daughters – Upinder, Daman and Amrit.

In 1971, he joined the Indian Administrative Service and was appointed as the Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. After this, he worked at the higher post in many departments of the Indian government.

Manmohan Singh’s political life

When PV Narasimha Rao became Prime Minister in 1991, he appointed Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister.

During this time, India was struggling with the economic crisis. Dr Manmohan Singh gave a new direction to the country’s economy so that the country entered the era of economic liberalisation.

At first, he cancelled the license rule, under which industries had to get approval from the government before making any changes.

His move benefited the private industries, which led to the process of disinvestment and privatisation in government industries.

During 1998-2004 when there was BJP government in India, he was the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

In spite of winning the Lok Sabha elections in the 2004 general elections, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi approved the Prime Minister of India as the Prime Minister.

Due to his clean and honest image, he became quite popular in the general public.

He took the oath of office on May 22, 2004. In collaboration with Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Manmohan Singh worked towards the development of trade and economy.

India’s gross domestic product was 9% in 2007 and India became the second largest developing economy in the world.

Under his leadership, the National Rural Health Mission has started for the convenience of rural citizens. This work has been appreciated throughout the world.

During his tenure, the education sector also improved considerably. The Government has successfully tried to provide higher education to the backward castes and the people of the society.

However, some parties opposed the reservation bill and sought justice for qualified students.

The Manmohan Singh Government passed several laws to end terrorism. After the terrorist attack on Mumbai in 2008, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was formed.

To strengthen e-governance and national security in 2009, the Indian Unique Identification Authority was formed, under which people have been declared a multi-purpose national identity card.

This government has made and maintained strong relationships with different countries. The effective foreign policy introduced in the tenure of PV Narasimha Rao was successfully used in the existing project.

Manmohan Singh tried to end the border dispute with China and end terrorism in Kashmir.

In spite of the boycott by the opposition of the controversial Indo-US nuclear deal, the government made this agreement.

In 1982, St. John’s College, Cambridge, gave honorary membership to Manmohan Singh.
Five years later, the Indian government honoured him with Padma Vibhushan.
In 1994, he was awarded the Distinguished Fellows of London School of Economics.
aIn 1999, Dr Manmohan Singh was subscribed by National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi.
In 2002, she was awarded the Anna Saheb Chirmule Award by Anna Saheb Chirmule Trust. Two years later he was given the Best Parliamentary Award by the Indian Parliamentary Party.
In 2010, he was awarded the World Statesman Award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.
