R. Venkataraman Biography

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was an Indian lawmaker, freedom fighter, politician and the new president of the country. Before becoming the President, he was also Vice-President of India for nearly four years.

After studying law, he practiced in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court and also joined the Indian Independence Movement in youth. He had participated in the ‘Quit India’ movement and was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha four times and was the Finance and Defense Minister in the Central Government. He also served as Minister of State in the Central Government At the international level; he was also a member and president of many prestigious institutions including the United Nations.

The Early life

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was born on December 4, 1910, in Rajmadam, near the Pattukottai in Tanjore district in Tamil Nadu.

His early education took place in Madras, and he did postgraduate in economics from Madras’s Loyola College.

After this, he got a law degree from law college Madras. Initially, he practiced in the Madras High Court and then started his work by registering his name in the Supreme Court in 1951.

During the advocacy, he joined the independence movement. He participated in a ‘Quit India’ campaign in the most significant changes of Indian National Congress opposed to the British rule and went to jail in 1942.

During this period, he continued to be interested in law, and when the transfer of power was almost fixed in 1946, he was included in the team of lawyers who had been assigned to save those Indian nationals in the court in Malay and Singapore. Political life

Due to being connected with the work of advocacy, R. Venkataraman’s contact also increased from the field of politics. He was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly who composed the Constitution of India.

In 1950, he was elected to the permanent parliament of independent India (1950-52). After this, he was also elected to the country’s first parliament (1952-1957).

During this time, he was a member of the Indian parliamentary delegation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in New Zealand. In 1953-54, he was also the secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party.

In spite of being elected to Parliament in 1957, he resigned for a ministerial post in Madras State.

In Madras state, he worked in various ministries from 1957 to 1967. During this time, he was also the leader of the Upper House Madras Legislative Council.

Venkataraman was made a member of the Planning Commission in 1967. They were given the responsibility of industry, labor, energy, traffic, transport, and railway. He remained in the post till 1971.

In 1977, he was once again elected to the Lok Sabha from Madras (South) and was made the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

He was also a member of the ‘Political Affairs Committee’ and ‘Economic Affairs Committee’ of the federal cabinet. Along with this, he also took charge of the International Monetary Fund, the International Rebuilding and Development Bank and the Governor of the Asian Development Bank.

Venkataraman was a representative of India at the United Nations General Assembly in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961. In 1958, he led the Indian delegation to the 42nd session of the International Workers’ Convention in Geneva.

He also represented India in the Inter-Parliamentary Conference held in Vienna City in 1978. From 1955 to 1979, Venkataraman was a Member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal and was the President from 1968 to 1979.

In the year 1980, Venkataraman was once again elected to the Lok Sabha and made the finance minister in the Indira Gandhi Cabinet.

He was later elected the Defense Minister of India. As defense minister, he carried forward the Indian missile development program. They are A.P.J. Abdul Kalam came from the space program in the missile program.

After this, he was made Vice President of India and again in 1987 he was elected the President of India. During his five-year tenure, he worked with four prime ministers.

Honors and awards

R. Venkataraman received many awards and honors. Madras, Burdwan and Nagarjuna universities honored him with ‘Doctorate of Law’ (Honorary).

Madras Medical College honored him with ‘Honorary Fellow’ and ‘Roorkee University’ by Doctor of Social Sciences.

He was given a ‘copper letter’ to participate in the Independence Movement of India and K. He was awarded the Soviet Land Prize for his travelogue on the tour of Kamaraj’s socialist countries.

United Nations General Secretary honored him for his services in the United Nations Administrative Tribunal. Shankaracharya of Kanchipuram honored him with ‘Sat Seva Ratna.’

Ramaswamy Venkataraman passes away

On January 12, 2009, he was admitted to the Army’s New Delhi hospital. Their condition deteriorated day after day and eventually, they left the world on January 27, 2009.
