Early life

Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944, in India’s most famous political family.

His grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, played a vital role in the fight for India’s independence and became the first Prime Minister of Independent India.

His parents lived separately, so Rajiv Gandhi was raised to his grandfather’s house where his mother lived.

Rajiv Gandhi completed his early education from the famous Doon School and later studied at the University of London at Trinity College and Cambridge.

In Cambridge, Rajiv Gandhi met Italian Italian student Sonia Mino, and both of them got in love with each other. The marriage of both of them took place in the year 1969.

After returning to India, Rajiv Gandhi became a pilot in a commercial airline. Here, his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi had entered politics and became a trusted representative of his mother, Indira Gandhi.

After Sanjay’s death in a plane crash in 1980, Raji reluctantly entered politics on the advice of his mother.

He won his first Lok Sabha election from his brother’s parliamentary constituency Amethi. Soon he became the General Secretary of the Congress Party.

After the assassination of Indira Gandhi in October 1984, at the age of 40, she became the Prime Minister of India.

In 1984, he called for the general elections and got a significant victory for the Congress party, riding on the wave of sympathy.

AHe improved bilateral relations with the United States and expanded economic and scientific cooperation.

He looked at the science, technology and related industries and reducing import quotas, taxes and tariffs on trades based on technology, especially computers, airlines, defence and telecommunications.

He did important work towards reducing the bureaucracy and protecting the administration from bureaucratic schemes.

In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi announced a National Education Policy for modernisation and expansion of higher education programs across India.

Rajiv Gandhi launched comprehensive police and army campaign against terrorists in Punjab.

The efforts of peace talks between the Sri Lankan government and LTTE insurgents were reversed, and Rajiv’s government had to face an increased failure.

According to the peace agreement signed in 1987, the Indian peacekeeping force was to bring LTTE control in Sri Lanka, but some incidents of distrust and conflict turned LTTE into an open battle between militants and Indian soldiers.

Thousands of Indian soldiers were killed, and finally, Rajiv Gandhi withdrew the Indian army from Sri Lanka. It was Rajiv’s major diplomatic failure.

Although Rajiv Gandhi had promised to end corruption, he and his party itself had many allegations of corruption.

The biggest scandal was the ‘Bofors gun scam’ associated with the alleged payment by the Swedish Bofors Weapons Company.

Due to their scandals, their popularity decreased dramatically, and they faced defeat in the general elections held in 1989.

A coalition government came to power, but it could not complete its term and in 1991 general elections were held.

During an election campaign in Sriperumbudur of Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991, suicide bombers of LTTE killed Rajiv Gandhi.
